How To Play

Codewords is a party word game for two teams, played across everyone's phones with one shared game code.

1. One player taps Create Game and shares the two-word game code (for example RIVER-CASTLE) with the group.
2. Everyone else enters that code under Join A Game.
3. In the lobby, each player picks a team (Red or Blue) and a role. Each team needs exactly one Spymaster and at least one Operative.
4. The host starts the game. Spymasters see the secret key and give a one-word clue plus a number. Operatives tap the words they think belong to their team.
5. Find all your team's agents to win. Tap the assassin and your team loses instantly.

Common Questions

How do I use my own words?

Tap My Word Lists then New Word List. You can type your own words or tap a Topic Helper chip to fill the list from a theme. Save it, and it will appear in the Word List picker when you create a game. Lists with fewer than 25 words are topped up from the standard deck.

Can I use one word list in more than one game?

Yes. Word lists are saved to your account and can be reused in any game you host.

I lost my game or want to clear it from my list.

On the home screen under Your Games, tap Rejoin to go back in, or Remove to clear it. If you are the host, removing deletes the room for everyone; otherwise it just removes you from it.

How do I delete my account?

Sign in, scroll to the Account section at the bottom of the home screen, and tap Delete Account, then confirm. This permanently deletes your account, your saved word lists, and any games you host. It cannot be undone.

I forgot my password.

Email jesse@jessehaynes.com from your account address and we will help you get back in. You can also sign in with Apple or Google instead.

The game will not load or a code will not work.

Check that everyone typed the code exactly as shared (hyphens and spaces are forgiving, but spelling is not), and make sure you have a working connection. If it still fails, email us with the game code and we will look into it.

We collect only your email address and display name to run your account, and the games and word lists you create. No ads, no trackers, no analytics. Read the full Privacy Policy.
